Experience:
As well as my practice in Godalming, I have provided counselling at the Cancer Center at The Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton as part of the Macmillan Psychological Therapies Team and I have worked for Sutton Counselling Service and Horsham & Crawley Counselling Group for a number of years.
Prior to qualifying as a counsellor, my background was in commerce and industry so I am accustomed to the stresses of modern employment. I was a Samaritan for a number of years, and worked as a trainer with their Prison Team.
Qualifications:
I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Integrative Counselling from the University of Surrey at Roehampton.
This training provided a broad base for psychodynamic, person-centred, existentialist and other forms of counselling. Over the years, my practice has developed using mainly the psychodynamic approach but with the advantage of being able to pull in the other disciplines where appropriate.
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
I abide by their professional association's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, including their Complaints Procedures. This promotes safe and professional counselling practices.
Personal Approach
I use an integrative approach - which means that I draw on a number of theories in my work, and am able to tailor my approach to individual clients.
However, under-pinning everything will be the relationship we make together - whether you decide on short-term counselling or embark on the more intensive journey of medium to longer term psychotherapy.
I believe, as much research has concluded, that the relationship between client and therapist is central to the work, and my aim is therefore to help you to feel comfortable and accepted so that difficult issues can be explored and worked through. So, maybe the thing to take from this is not to come to counselling with an expectation that you will be provided with the answers, this is your process and it is a unique experience for everyone.
